This article discusses, from a didactic device, reference knowledge that was produced to teach fraction. We observe that the device, on the other hand, appeared in different didactic manuals of primary education, in different historical periods. That being the case, the question emerged: how did the authors of manuals systematize the teaching of fractions knowledge, integrating the same didactic device? It was assumed that the device could compose reference knowledge for teaching, knowledge to teach and knowledge to teach fraction. For the analysis, concepts of cultural history and the socio-historical line were taken as parameters, such as: school culture, knowing how to teach and knowing for teaching, and didactic device. Currently, it is possible to verify that the object studied maintains the same purpose: to be a didactic device. However, from the research undertaken, it was found that it was approached to deal with different knowledge inherent to the fraction. It was linked to the teaching of parts of the whole, operations between fractions, relationship between quantities, relationship between fractional number and decimal number, teaching equivalence classes, and other knowledge to teach. It was also possible to comprehend that knowledge inherent to it can be understood as vestiges of redefinitions of different appropriations by authors of didactic manuals. Thus, the investigation shows that a didactic device can be the means of articulating knowledge to and for teaching mathematics.
