Monument to the Victims of the Discovery of America (UFSC, 1995): Created by Ivens Fontoura, Marcia Simões, and Aurora Mendes, the obelisk pays homage to the pre-Columbian peoples and cultures affected by European colonization after Columbus's arrival. Selected in an international contest with 80 works by Latin American artists, it represents a timeline: the quadrangular base divides the Atlantic Ocean (water) and the American continent (grass), cut by the bar of the Treaty of Tordesilhas. Oxidized metal plates symbolize the European impact, changing the obelisk's direction. At the base, pre-Hispanic symbols; at the top, post-colonization figures.
