Abstract

In this article we present the main contributions of the Brazilian Physicist José Leite Lopes (1918-2006) to the development of Theoretical Physics. We begin with his formation as a Physicist, highlighting his work in preparing research groups in Brazil and France . We describe his main contributions to the development of Physics, in particular his study on the Electron-Neutron interaction mediated by a Neutral Vector Boson. We also relate his participation on the establishment of the Brazilian Center for Physics Research (CBPF) and of the National Research Council (CNPq), as well as his role as a writer of didactic books and books on the Scientific Policies. At last, we underline his artistic sensibility, remembering his admiration for the austro-german poet Rainer Maria Rilke and the pictures he painted, and we also list the honorific titles and the honours he received.
