Factors that affect the employability of the LGBT population: review of the literature

LGBT individuals face barriers to employment due to discrimination stemming from prejudice based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Despite existing jurisprudence protecting LGBT individuals and regulating discriminatory acts, these acts persist. This is compounded by barriers in education, health, housing, and other sectors, hindering well-being and the development of a dignified life. To identify factors affecting the employability of the LGBT population, a systematic literature review was conducted, focusing on topics including the pay gap, microdiscrimination, and job satisfaction. Several factors that improved employability were identified: gender, visibility, place of origin, criminal record, socioeconomic status, community support, years of education, sex work, and health status. While research on the LGBT population and employment has increased, Latin American studies have been very scarce or unsystematic.
