Abstract

This essay analyses the encroachment of for-profit corporations on the mental health services delivery system in the United States, which may provide importance insights to development and social welfare practitioners and scholars internationally. For the purposes of clarity and focus, the article explores this issue through the vehicle of Dorwart and Epstein's classic text, Privatization and Mental Health Services. The author explores the history of privatization in this context, and discusses how the context of treatment services was changed due to the dictates of the privatized environment. This discussion serves as a warning for social welfare practitioners and social scientists in the developing world, who have witnessed the encroachment of privatization through the process of globalization.
