Subaltern Studies e história vista de baixo: aproximações e distanciamentos no debate historiográfico indiano

O artigo apresenta o debate historiográfico indiano, dos anos 1990 e 2000, sobre as relações entre os Subaltern Studies e a história vista de baixo tal como praticada por historiadores sociais marxistas britânicos nas décadas precedentes. Configuradas a partir de diferentes contextos institucionais, alinhamentos teórico-metodológicos e expectativas políticas, três posições hegemonizaram a discussão. A primeira viu a historiografia subalternista como uma bem-sucedida versão indiana da história vista de baixo que, a partir de dado momento, rompeu com seus pressupostos iniciais, aderindo à “virada linguística”. A segunda sustentou que os Subaltern Studies nunca teriam produzido uma história vista de baixo condizente com os parâmetros da história social marxista britânica. Por fim, a terceira corrente entendeu a produção do coletivo indiano como um inovador empreendimento de historiografia pós-colonial, o qual, ainda que inicialmente influenciado pela história vista de baixo, sempre operou em terrenos não mapeados pela história social marxista britânica.
