Goal: This study aims to identify and analyze elements within the internal organizational environment that influence risk management in a Public Higher Education Institution in southern Brazil, focusing on internal factors such as cultural aspects and work pressure, which impact the formulation of policies and mitigation strategies.
Methodology/approach: Utilizing a quantitative approach, this survey-based research gathered data through an online questionnaire. Predominantly structured with closed-ended questions on a Likert scale, the survey targeted technical-administrative and teaching staff, yielding responses from 684 participants.
Originality/relevance: This study underscores the interplay between the internal organizational milieu and risk management within public educational institutions. It delves into a domain that, until now, has been scarcely charted and minimally documented in academic literature.
Main findings: Two factors, "Cultural Aspects" and "Work Pressure," were found to positively influence risk management. Conversely, roles such as "Heading a Sector" and practices like "Procedure Standardization" demonstrated a lesser impact.
Theoretical contributions: The research augments the theoretical comprehension of organizational risk management by introducing a set of factors that may guide future studies in this realm.
Management contributions: This study furnishes valuable insights for crafting risk management policies, bolstering stakeholder interactions, and providing a foundation for strategic decision-making, all with a view to enhancing managerial efficacy in similar institutions.
