Reference models are theoretical elaborations created to shape the development of organizational processes and operations. The ISO series and the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence Framework are examples of such models as well as the roadmaps for Competitive Intelligence (CI) development proposed in Herring and Leavitt (2011) and Hedin and Thieme (2010). This article analyzes the CI roadmaps using the reference models literature, creating a conceptually consistent understanding of its strengths and limitations. Therefore, a literature research related to reference models and CI roadmaps was performed, followed by the roadmaps evaluation according to the Fette, Loss and Zwicker (2005) model, resulting in the description of strengths and limitations that roadmaps may bring to the CI units. By using a new theoretical approach for CI roadmaps study, this work expands the understanding of them beyond the reading of their original articles could provide, allowing a more conscious decision about their use.
