Abstract

Many contemporary artists have used archives in their works since the end of the 1980s. However this artistic trend has not been really discussed by the archivists until now. The intention of this article is to present the main outlines of a research project on the artistic use of archives by contemporary artists, more specifically of photographic images. In the first time, a review of the literature will show the importance of the phenomena in the artistic field. Then, a typology with the aim of showing the preoccupations of the artists and the orientations of their production is sketched out. Thirdly, we give five reasons to be interested in this new exploitation of archives from an archivist point of view. We will finish by underlining the contribution of this project to the advancement of the archival science and the contextual approach of our research.
