The myth of LGBTQIA+ dissidences in Chilean digital media

This article critically analyzes the construction of the myth carried out by the most-read digital media (MCM) in Chile concerning LGBTQIA+ dissenters, based on publications surrounding the international LGBTQIA+ pride day of 2022. From a qualitative approach, a critical analysis of 40 news items from the most read digital media in Chile (press, TV, and radio) was conducted, using the constructivist grounded theory as a method. The results show a complex mythical construction that, at first glance, has evolved, portraying LGBTQIA+ dissenters from more comprehensive, human, and informed perspectives; however, at a deeper level of analysis, it was observed that the media discourse still obeys the interests of hegemonic groups, who monopolize the social construction of reality and, consequently, determine the way we understand and signify LGBTQIA+ people.
