The present study analyzes the memory in “Olhos d’água”, by Conceição Evaristo (2016), understand it as a mechanism for rescuing the protagonist’s identity. Therefore, the discussions proposed here about the idea of the body are mediated by sociological and anthropological analyses. Soon after, the role of ancestral memory and the place occupied by Evaristo and her narrative when inserted in a context of post-colonial intellectual production are analyzed. The corpus dialogues directly with the studies of ancestry, memory and identity, evidencing the relationship with the ancestors and breaking with the stereotypes attributed to the black body. From this perspective, two aspects nourish the analysis of the memory category: the body, as a symbolic and cultural construction, and the ontological force exerted by the black body, now the protagonist, from the perspective of cosmoperception.
