This research aimed to explore how some technologies, in particular translation memories and computer-assisted translation (CAT tools), can be used to translate endangered indigenous languages and support their revitalisation and the communication of their speakers, as well as the preservation of identity and knowledge contained within these languages and amongst their peoples. Translation technologies almost always require large corpora to function. However, indigenous languages rarely have such corpora available. In this sense, this research also had an outreach component, creating with the Sateré-Mawé people, inhabitants of the Lower Amazon region, and selected to participate in the research, a minimal corpus of texts translated between Portuguese and Sateré in order to enable a CAT tool to function. The research methodology was a case study, involving the application of these technologies to the translation of the chosen language pair and the assessment of their performance and results. The research completed the construction of the database of translated texts, leading to some findings about the native language, and allowed the use of the CAT tool for some translations, demonstrating that it can indeed speed up the translation of texts and, when carried out by indigenous people, legitimise the translated texts, although not without certain risks. Furthermore, the process developed here can be replicated with other communities, making it valuable for the preservation of endangered languages.
