When Poetry is made from the Scream: A Translation of Os Crimes de Putumayo

This study refers to the first chapter of the judicial process
concerning crimes perpetrated by rubber tappers installed in the Amazon
region of Putumayo, in Peru, during the 1910s, which generated the
book El Proceso de Putumayo y sus Secretos Inauditos (Iquitos, Perú:
CETA, 2004). The author Carlos A. Valcárcel, first judge of the process,
produces a final text that goes beyond the perspective of the jurisconsult
and prints the humanist vision in line with the dawn of the 20th century.The chapter under translation for this study – The crimes of Putumayo – is
constructed by a discourse that frankly assumes a posture of indignation
due to the blatant irresponsibility and omission of the Peruvian penal
system, which provoked the criminals’ impunity and the only historical
penalty, of the criminals. indigenous people who suffered genocide.
Therefore, the translation of this chapter reveals the evident break of the objective judicial discourse and shows us an author-judge frankly taken by opinion and indignation.
