However, even if along history the visual images have gained a great importance as sources of information, one cannot deny that with the newest information and communication technologies (ICT) they drew the attention of experts from the most different fields of knowledge, such as arts, biology, astronomy, archeology, history, health, fashion, decoration, public relations, editing, engineering and architecture, among others. Presents some theoretical reflections concerning representation in Peirce’s perspective based on the context of the new approaches used for the treatment of visual images, using as examples the paradigms of the manual, semiautomatic, automatic and mixed index representation. The results of the experiments show that the difficulties found in the construction of an index representation of that document type originate from the complexity inherent in the process of production and reception of the imagetic sign.Downloads
