Abstract

Objective: We evaluate the endogeny, dependence and representation of 16 Brazilian tourism journals, in the period 1990-2018, for institutions, states and regions of Brazil.

Methods: The gathering and construction of the database (authorship – institutions, states and regions) were done manually, as well as the review and disambiguation of names. The calculation was performed using our own computer tools.

Results: In general, endogeny (institutions) is very high in the first year of publication of journals, starting to fall – for almost all of them – in the second year, with the prevalence of numbers below 20% at the end of the historical series. The states and regions present similar results, but at higher levels. Dependence shows that, for almost all journals, the institutions are very dependent of their own journal to publish in the field, in its first years, but there is, soon after it, a clear and persistent downward trend. For states and regions, the results are similar, but with lower numbers and fewer exceptions to the rule. The representation results are similar to those of the dependence (institutions). For states and regions, it is difficult to identify trends and patterns.

Conclusions: The results of endogeny, dependence and representation allow us to verify the production of institutions, states and regions in 16 Brazilian tourism journals (1990-2018). In general, there is a clear downward trend in endogeny, dependence and representation, for most journals, regarding institutions, states and regions.
