Facing the digital abyss: Media-Education and cultural mediations

Abstract

 This article discusses digital inclusion from the perspective of education and culture, highlighting the ways the question is presented in Brazil, but understandin tha they are not exclusive to this context Given the complex challenges for digital conclusion in the context of globalization, the article emphasizes the importance that children and youth have real opportunities to use new technologies and languages, understanding that inclusion means much moe than acces to technologies, and is one of the fronts in the struggle against inequality. The authors propose that the understanding of the digital barrier be enriched  through the valorization of cultural mediations. The pa per discusses the possibilities for a culturalist perspective of media-education and promotes digital inclusion that is an experience of citizenship, belonging and critical and creative participation in the culture.

Monica Fantin, UFSC - Florianópolis - SC

Doutora em Educação pela Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (2006) com Estágio no Exterior, na Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milão, Itália. Possui Mestrado em Educação, Teoria e Prática Pedagógica (UFSC,1996) e Graduação em Pedagogia (UFSC,1986). Professora Adjunta do Centro de Educação da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, atua no curso de Pedagogia e no Programa de Pós-graduação em Educação, Linha de Pesquisa Educação e Comunicação. Pesquisadora do Núcleo Infância, Comunicação e Arte, UFSC/CNPq, tem experiência na área de educação, com ênfase no campo da infância, mídia-educação e formação de professores. Gilka Elvira Ponzi Girardello, UFSC - Florianópolis - SC

Possui graduação em Comunicação pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (1978), mestrado interdisciplinar em Ciências Humanas pela New School for Social Research de Nova York (1990) e doutorado em Ciências da Comunicação pela Universidade de São Paulo (1998). Professora associada da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, atua na graduação em Pedagogia e no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Educação, dentro da Linha Educação e Comunicação, pesquisando principalmente os seguintes temas: comunicação, cultura, educação, infância, imaginação e narrativa.
