Translated literature in the Hallyu era: The paratexts of Almond, by Won-pyung Sohn

This article analyzes the editorial strategies for positioning Won-pyung Sohn’s novel Amêndoas in the Brazilian literary system, based on the production of digital paratexts by Rocco. Based on Descriptive Translation Studies (Lefevere, 1992; Toury, 2012), Paratext Theory (Batchelor, 2018; Genette, 2009) and Hallyu Studies (Jin, 2021; Mazur, 2023), the work investigates how the work was associated with other Korean cultural products in the context of Hallyu 3.0. The selected corpus comprises the publisher’s Instagram posts, analyzed from a multimodal translatory perspective (Kaindl, 2020), also considering the processes of recombinant appropriation in digital media (Voigts, 2017). The results show that the publisher employed paratextual strategies that emphasize the book’s relationship with other Korean cultural products, incorporating visual and discursive references to the countr’'s culture and exploring its reception in the Brazilian publishing market. The study shows how paratextual manipulation guides the reception of translated literature and reinforces the influence of digital dynamics on the construction of the image of works.
