A functionalist perspective in the translation of the Trafficking in Persons Report 2023

The general aim of this article is to contribute to the discussions on the translating of international documents, regarding human trafficking. More specifically, it analyses the functionalist approach taken in the translation of the 2023 Trafficking in Persons Report, with the objective of: i. providing the legal context for the concept of human trafficking; ii. discussing the textual analysis, with emphasis on its function in the Brazilian context. The Circular Model of Analysis, based on Christiane Nord (2016), was used to investigate extra-textual and intra-textual elements, with the aim of proposing appropriate translation choices. As a result, the translation demonstrates sensitivity to the stylistic and pragmatic choices of the source text and attention to the discursive norms of the target culture, in order to preserve the communicative effectiveness of the original text.
