Editorial, Vol. 15Abstract
Brazilian historiography has played a crucial role in the renewal of the Social History of Labor, combining studies on slavery and industrial labor. The Worlds of Labor Working Group, founded in 2000, has consolidated these approaches, standing out on the international scene. In 2006, John Monteiro highlighted how regional studies challenged linear models of transition from forced to wage labor, emphasizing social agency and subaltern strategies of resistance. The current edition of the Worlds of Labor journal reinforces this vitality with two thematic dossiers. The first, on mining in the 15th and 18th centuries, explores labor systems in Brazil, Bolivia, and Mexico, addressing labor cultures and their symbolic dynamics. The second analyzes racial relations in the worlds of labor, highlighting ethno-racial conflicts and black activism in the slavery and post-abolition periods. The free section features nine articles that expand on contemporary debates, such as job insecurity, class solidarity, and food security. Highlights include studies on labor mobilizations in the First Republic, workers' resistance in Argentina, and the reception of the Paris Commune in Brazil. Other sections include debates on John D. French's book and multilingual reviews, expanding international dialogues. The journal reaffirms its relevance by connecting social history and current workers' issues.
