Abstract

The article reflects upon schools in rural regions with a focus on  three issues: the characteristics of rural regions in Santa  Catarina State, the transformation taking place there and
the meaning of school. The purpose of the article is to  stimulate discussion about schools in rural regions,
considering the significant technical developments and the  increasing poverty of the rural population. It emphasises the  inequality and the brutality of Brazilian society. Schools,
which were created to promote social development; reduce  migration to urban areas and take urban culture
to the underdeveloped rural population; need to be discussed  to overcome the separation between urban and rural  environments. This should be based on the political and
education experiences being constructed by the rural workers’
organisations.
