In this article, we aim to discuss the translation into Brazilian Portuguese of the chapter “Haute-Amazone,” which is part of the book Voyage aux Provinces Brésiliennes du Pará et des Amazones en 1860, précédé d'un rapide coup d'œil sur le littoral du Brésil, by Alejandro de Belmar. Originally written in French, the book was published in London in 1861 and presents the travel accounts of this explorer along the Brazilian coast and into the Upper Amazon region. In this context, we seek to highlight the challenges inherent in translating a 19th-century travel narrative by a French explorer, as well as to offer a critical reading of the exogenous and colonizing gaze that permeates Belmar’s thoughts, reflections, and their critical reception.
