Shakespeare checks into the digital world: rewriting his plays using Emojis

Abstract

This study analyzes the OMG Shakespeare series, which aims at bringing Shakespeare’s plays to young audiences using digital language. The series features rewritings of Shakespeare’s plays into WhatsApp-message format. There are four titles available: srsly Hamlet, Macbeth #killingit, YOLO Juliet and A Midsummer Night #nofilter. The analysis seeks to determine: i) the general concept of the series; ii) the main strategies used in the intermedial adaptation of the plays and iii) the relationships between verbal and visual languages in the texts. The theoretical framework relies on Irina Rajewisky’s (2010) and Werner Wolf’s (1999) concepts of intermediality, Charles Peirce’s (1998) theory of signs, Lars Elleström’s (2010, 2013) conceptual framework on modality and media and on Linda Hutcheon’s (2013) concepts of adaptation.

Marcia A. P. Martins é doutora em Comunicação e Semiótica pela PUC-SP, tendo realizado estágio pós-doutoral na Queen Mary University of London em 2012. Tradutora e professora, atua nos cursos de formação de tradutores e no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Estudos da Linguagem do Departamento de Letras da PUC-Rio. Organizou as coletâneas Tradução e multidisciplinaridade (Lucerna/PUC-Rio, 1999) e Visões e identidades de Shakespeare no Brasil (Lucerna, 2004), e é co-editora do periódico Tradução em Revista. Compilou a base de dados sobre traduções brasileiras do cânone dramático shakespeariano disponível em www.dbd.puc-rio.br/shakespeare, da qual é gestora. Entre as publicações recentes, incluem-se a co-organização da antologia bilíngue Palavra de tradutor / The Translator's Word (EdUFSC, 2018).

Ofélia da Conceição Machado Sagres é Especialista em Literaturas de Língua Inglesa (1994-1995) e em Educação com Aplicação da Informática (2012) pela Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Graduada em Letras (Português-Inglês) pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, é professora de Língua Inglesa do Colégio Pedro II. Atualmente desenvolve pesquisa de mestrado na Pós-Graduação em Estudos da Linguagem da PUC-Rio, com previsão de término em 2020.1.
