The dossier brings together research that renews Latin American rural history by emphasizing the diversity of labour forms, population mobilities, and the multiple configurations of possession and property that structured rural worlds between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The studies combine rigorous empirical analysis with historiographical debates on migration, agricultural colonization, land conflicts, labour regimes, and subaltern moralities. They highlight a wide range of actors—enslaved people, freedpersons, colonists, squatters, sharecroppers, and wage workers. Taken together, they show how the state, the market, and local customary practices produced persistent tensions surrounding access to land, the organization of labour, and everyday forms of resistance, offering a comparative framework that deepens our understanding of agrarian dynamics in Latin America.
