Abstract

The intention of this paper is to discuss the varied forms of disputes about land occurred in the Central area of Zona da Mata of Minas Gerais from the official date of its occupation (1767) and the late eighteenth century. These disputes were occasioned especially by the different forms of land occupation (purchase/sale, and possession of sesmarias). The results of these contests show the importance of the presence of the colonial administration (acting as a mediator of conflicts), as indicated in questions related to the peculiarity in the forms of land acquisition in Minas during the eighteenth century.
