Abstract

This work critically examines the praxis of Sign Language Interpreters (ILS) as political agents and discursive mediators during the global surge of far-right ideologies, focusing specifically on Brazil’s sociopolitical landscape. Anchored in the axiom that ‘we are born of conflict,’ it first delineates the historical constitution of interpretation as a profession, exposing how ILS navigate power asymmetries and institutionalized linguistic exclusion. Through dialectical engagement with Foucault’s (1971) discourse theory, Bourdieu’s (1989) symbolic violence, and Fairclough’s (1989) critical discourse analysis, the study deconstructs interpreter neutrality as an ideological apparatus that systematically silences marginalized voices. The analysis further interrogates how far-right policies corrode public institutions, academic spaces, and language rights, demonstrating how conservative revanchism dismantles decades of Deaf community advancements. Positionality emerges as central: interpreters’ practices either entrench hegemonic structures or forge emancipatory pathways for symbolic resistance. The article culminates in a provocation—demanding ILS professionals embrace radical critical consciousness against authoritarian encroachment and weaponize discursive resistance to safeguard human dignity.
