Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyse lexicalization patterns of manner of motion in translations to Polish and Brazilian Portuguese from a literary text in English. Based on Talmian language classification into satellite-framed and verb-framed, as well as on Slobin’s Thinking for Translation theory, we compare the manner of motion’s frequencies and its lexicalization with use of manner verbs or path verbs in the analysed texts. As expected, the English and Polish texts contain more manner verbs than the Brazilian text, although, surprisingly, the latter expresses manner of motion only somewhat less frequently than the original. The translation techniques’ analysis demonstrated that the Brazilian manner translation is more accurate, whereas the Polish text contains numerous manner modulations and additions, absent in the original text. We conclude that the lexicalization patterns, influenced by the linguistic directionality, result also from the creative translators' decisions.
