n Trabalho e proletariado no capitalismo contemporâneo, Sérgio Lessa argue that the “proletariat” in Marx refers to only the workers who transforms the elements of nature in Use-values, “the substance of all wealth”; thus excludes from the class of proletariat all of wage-earners outside the manual work of production, as well as the intellectual work from the collective labourer. This article will discuss this interpretation of Marx, opposing to its point of view a historical-critical approach to the category of social class.
