In this article, I discuss issues related to colonization by European immigrants of land situated in the forest region of Rio Grande do Sul during the second half of the nineteenth century. In a special way, I think about the relation of this process with the government’s intention in giving further development to the agricultural production in the province. Furthermore, I try to discuss the relationship of interest with the process of constructions of historical narratives about peopling of the state and on the individuals involved on it. Accordingly, it will be discussed issues concerning the dominant interpretations at the time, whereby the “improvement” was directly tied to agriculture introduction of European immigrants in the border areas of the province land, trying to link these views to the social reasons that justify them.
