This paper sets as its main goal to study the Spanish translations of Camões’ lyrical poetry by José María de Cossío. As an introduction, the history of the Spanish renditions of the work of the great Portuguese poet is reviewed, from which it is apparent that a considerable chronological gap exists between the first translations of Camões’ epic compositions, which go back to the 16th century, and those of the lyrical genre, which only began to appear in the early 19th century. In addition, a detailed overview of Cossío’s activity as a Camões-scholar is presented, in which due attention is given to Cossío’s three-fold involvement as translator, anthologist and literary critic.Downloads
