Abstract

One of the most anthologized and discussed poems by Wallace Stevens, singled out by the author himself as one of his favorites, “The Emperor of Ice-Cream”, first published in 1922 and included in the author’s debut collection – Harmonium, released in the following year – holds an arguably distinctive position within the poet’s presence within Portuguese language. Unlike other major works by the author, this poem has been translated by two of the most distinguished Brazilian poet-translators: Décio Pignatari and Paulo Henriques Britto. After analyzing the original poem and both previous Brazilian translations, a new translational endeavor will be presented, while also identifying its key translation characteristics.
