The article discusses the changing process of the urban transport system in Sao Paulo operated by The Sao Paulo Tramway Light and Power Company Limited in the first three decades of the20thcentury. The introduction of the tram in Sao Paulo consolidated a category of workers until then notquantitatively significant. Despite of a certain distinctiveness for driving one of the great inventions of modernity, the motormen and the drivers were harassed by the press, which usedto push the users against them. Furthermore, the company’s control upon the workers and the work relationshipscontributed to decrease the pressure for claims and protest in a moment of rising of the struggles and “rebuilding” of the city of Sao Paulo.
