This article analyzes the discourses on tuberculosis that were articulated from the end of the 19th century to the mid-20th century. These discourses – which emphasized the environmental and social dimensions more and the labor-related dimensions less – coexisted, complemented and competed with each other. It was only in the second quarter of the 20th century that tuberculosis began to be more strongly associated with occupational diseases. This recognition, however, did not result in legislation, but in case law produced by specific cases. Alfredo Palacios' pioneering work La Fatiga e suas projectos sociais (1923) was the recurring reference in this slow and fragmented process of recognizing tuberculosis as a disease of the world of work.
