Abstract

The main aim of this article is to provide some considerations about the translation of primary sources, with a focus on the translation of Amazonian texts. A secondary but no less relevant goal is to bring the issue of black slavery in the Dutch Amazonian colony to the Brazilian public via translation. Although the subject may be of interest to the Brazilian public in general, I believe that, due to the specificity of the topic and the nature of the text to be translated, the translated text may be of particular interest to specialists in the fields of history, anthropology and related areas who dedicate themselves to the study of black slavery in the Americas, especially those interested in a comparative perspective between Brazilian Amazonian quilombolas and the bosnegers of colonial Suriname. The discussion will focus on the translation of an excerpt from the Surinaamsche Almanak of 1821.
