Abstract

What function can the phenomenon of creative translation, iconic translation, or transcreation play among different forms of criticism? We will examine this topic within the scope of the division proposed by Umberto Eco, and its relationship to Haroldo de Campos’ thesis of “creative translation as criticism” – “if translation is a privileged form of critical reading, it will be through it that readers will be able to lead other poets, amateurs and students of literature to penetrate the heart of the artistic text, in its most intimate mechanisms and gears”. We will explore this thesis through the operational notion of icon, developed by C. S. Peirce (pos-1903), and an examination of John Donne’s transcreation, by Augusto de Campos. In our approach, transcreation is an icon of relations. It reveals, through a typically diagrammatic operation, a multilevel system of constraints. Our approach suggests an epistemic perspective for the icon, disregarded by Haroldo, capable of relocating his thesis in an unexplored theoretical setting.
