The presence ofslave owningwomen -widows and singles -was recurrent in the city of Desterro in the second half of the nineteenth-century (Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil). This text aims to study individual trajectories of some of these women, trying to understand the strategies that they used to build their lives, to deal with the incertitude of the everyday life, to interweave social relationships and to reach material and immaterial resources.
