Workers in Dispute: the UDN, the PCB, and Elections in Santa Catarina (1945-1947)

This article analyzes the 1945 and 1947 elections in Santa Catarina, focusing on the role of the Brazilian Communist Party (PCB) in the state. Through the intersection of sources and an analysis of the distribution of votes by electoral section, the study questions classical formulations about Santa Catarina’s politics between 1945 and 1964, particularly the notion of a “conservative-oligarchic hegemony” in the state and the “strong predominance” of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) in Florianópolis. Despite the PSD’s electoral victories in the first post-war elections, campaign strategies and the vote distribution in areas with higher worker concentrations reveal new dimensions of political dynamics and popular demands during the period.
