Taking into account the specificities of each historical period, the public authority closest to and perhaps most strongly identified with the provision of these services was the municipal one. This sphere, perhaps the most commonplace, of encounter between the State and workers, and yet so little known in its peculiarities, is increasingly emerging as a promising perspective for labor historians. In this brief introduction, we want to draw attention to the analytical possibilities that open up from treating the municipal sphere as a prism to illuminate certain dimensions of social conflict that permeated the daily experience of workers in the city.
