The dossier "Urban Social Movements" addresses issues related to the social history of labor, discussing the overcoming of traditional dichotomies such as "slave labor" versus "free labor" and "rural" versus "urban". The organization of the dossier sought a transdisciplinary approach, rejecting conventional divisions in the human sciences.
Nine articles are presented, written by experts in sociology, geography, social sciences and history, addressing topics such as urban social movements, mutual aid organizations, railway experiences, favela movements and trade unionism in Brazil.
The texts explore the continuities between slave labor and free labor, connecting rural and urban practices. The emphasis is on the political and cultural practices of workers. Despite progress, there are still gaps in the coverage of certain regions and topics, such as left-wing movements and non-militant culture, which need to be further explored in the social history of labor.
