This article analyzes the translation process of the story Les Andes, la Cordillère et la Amazonie (1889), published by the French-American physician Charles Fréderic Girard. Firstly, the desire to know and dominate other cultures will be discussed, leading many travelers to explore regions such as the Amazon. Based on Ferdinand Denis (1825) and Claude Lévi-Strauss (1996), we discuss the European perspective on other peoples, especially indigenous peoples, based on anthropology and history. In the same way, we consider the process of translating the Other, seen in confrontation with a supposed Self. That is, before exploring the translation process undertaken by the authors of this article of Charles Girard's text, it is important to explore the cultural translation undertaken by the French-American researcher himself. Finally, we explore our translation process, explaining the difficulties and solutions in translating a 19th-century text into an ethos and a new “here” and “now” of the 21st century in Latin America.
