Abstract

This article presents a literature review on reading in the brain with a focus on the comprehension of words and sentences. It is part of Bailer’s thesis (b), which aimed at investigating the brains of Brazilian Portuguese monolinguals and Brazilian-Portuguese and English bilinguals and their neuroanatomical response to the processing of written sentences. In this article, empirical behavioral and neuroimaging studies on reading processes at the word and sentence levels are presented, as well as the reading models by Kintsch and van Dijk, van Dijk and Kintsch, and Gagné, Yekovich and Yekovich that describe the whole reading process, from words to discourse. In addition, we discuss the role of individual differences, especially working memory capacity in reading comprehension. The objective is to describe what happens in the reader’s mind as s/he understands words, sentences, paragraphs and builds significant representations of texts and also to locate the reader in relation to the components that the Bailer’s study (b) dealt with.

Cyntia Bailer, Universidade Regional de Blumenau

Professora no Departamento de Letras da Universidade Regional de Blumenau (FURB) e no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Educação (PPGE/FURB). Doutora em Estudos da Linguagem no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Inglês UFSC (2012-2016). Foi bolsista CAPES, com estágio sanduíche no exterior, na Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, PA, EUA) (2014-2015). Mestre em Letras (Inglês e Literatura correspondente) pela UFSC (Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina) (2011). Possui graduação em Letras (Língua Portuguesa e Língua Inglesa e respectivas literaturas) pela FURB (Fundação Universidade Regional de Blumenau) (2008). Apresentou trabalhos e pesquisas desenvolvidas durante sua trajetória educacional. Tem experiência profissional no ensino da Língua Inglesa aos mais diversos níveis em escolas regulares e escolas de idiomas, bem como experiência em tradução e revisão. Como pesquisadora, está interessada na área de aquisição de segunda língua, com foco nos aspectos cognitivos envolvidos no processamento da linguagem e compreensão, em especial na área de leitura e de implementação desses processos no cérebro, e também na área de educação e formação de professores de línguas, com ênfase nas práticas de leitura e escrita em línguas.

Lêda Maria Braga Tomitch, Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina

É professora titular do Departamento de Língua e Literatura Estrangeiras da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, atuando no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Inglês: Estudos Linguísticos e Literários desde 1996. Possui mestrado em Letras (Inglês e Literatura Correspondente) (1988) e doutorado em Letras (Linguística Aplicada) (1995), ambos pela UFSC. Realizou pós-doutoramento na área de processamento da linguagem, no Center for Cognitive Brain Imaging, na Carnegie Mellon University, nos EUA (1999-2000), e na Universidade de Auckland, na Nova Zelândia, no Centre for Brain Research (Fev 2018 a Jan 2019). Seus interesses de pesquisa incluem os seguintes temas: relação entre a capacidade da memória de trabalho e a compreensão e produção escritas; a implementação dos processos componenciais da leitura no cérebro humano; e o ensino da leitura.
