A century of Brazilian literature translated in China

Since the 1920s, Brazilian literature has gradually entered China through translation. It has become an integral part of the country’s modern literary landscape and academic system. There have been many ups and downs over the past century. The historical process of translating and researching Brazilian literature in China can be divided into four stages: the initial period (1920s–1940s), the development period (1950s–1970s), the expansion period (1980s–2000s), and the innovation period (2000–present). Examining the historical context, translation methods, research focus, and notable writers of each period, as well as analyzing the development of knowledge and cultural concerns of different eras, reveals the overall trajectory of transformation. The complex negotiations between cultural workers and changes in political and economic environments during these periods reflect the interaction between literature, translation, and politics. This can provide a reference point and source of inspiration for current and future intercultural literary research.
