This paper aims at describing our procedures to translate the text “The Warlike Women of the Amazon: A historical study”, written by Richard Spruce during the second half of the 19th century and published in 1908. We describe our dialogues since from the sellection of the text, passing through concerns, translation choices and justifications, which are crossed by translation subcompetences (Hurtado Albir, 2020), triggering in the translated text which is characterized as a translation with commentary about the experienced translation process, explaining aspects that we consider relevant during the reading, orientantion, drafting and revision phases (Jakobsen, 2002). We highlight the importance of considering the linguistic-historical aspect based on the understanding of the world that goes beyond the necessary linguistic knowledge to translate a text. This perspective resulted in a work permeated with subjectivity, reflecting on ethics and recognizing the moment of textual construction of a translation about indigenous peoples and women as the ideal moment to present the relevance of the Other (Berman (2013) as being the indigenous, their territories, self-governance and sovereignty.
