Born in Sandycove, Dublin, Roger David Casement (1864-1916) was a British consul who later became an Irish revolutionary. During his lifetime, Casement was knighted for authoring two reports published as official brochures of the British parliament: the Congo report, written in 1903, during the reign of Leopold II of Belgium; and the Amazon report, in 1911. Both documents are known for recording the atrocities committed against the natives of these regions during the height of the rubber boom, at the beginning of the 20th century. It is as consul-general in Brazil that embarks on an investigation into the mistreatment of British citizens employed by the Peruvian Amazon Company, disembarking in Belém do Pará, from where he heads to Manaus and crosses the border upriver, toward the Putumayo district. The translation of Roger Casement’s Amazon journals was published
in Brazil in 2016, with selections by the historian Angus Mitchell and the Brazilian organizers, Laura
Izarra and Mariana Bolfarine. By translating three letters as part of his consular correspondence, we
seek to understand how the consul-general of Brazil reworks the experience – and the entire written record of it made in loco – of his trip to denounce the “crimes of the Putumayo”.
