Establishing levels of competence in translation: first results of the NACT project

Abstract

This paper presents the research project the PACTE group is carrying out on “Establishing Competence Levels in the Acquisition of Translation Competence in Written Translation”. The project aims to propose level descriptors as a first step towards developing a common European framework of reference for translation’s academic and professional arenas. The project is a continuation of PACTE’s previous experimental research on translation competence and its acquisition. Representatives of both academic and professional arenas participate in the project. It is organized into three stages, the first of which involved the production of a first level descriptor proposal, including a three-level scale with sub-levels and five descriptive categories (language competence; cultural, world knowledge, and thematic competence; instrumental competence; translation service provision competence; and translation problem solving competence). This proposal produced is to be evaluated by experts from the academic and professional arenas. This paper sets out the project, as well as the first level descriptor proposal.

Amparo Hurtado Albir is a Spanish professor, translator and researcher. She has studied modern Philology at the University of Valencia. She is currently a professor of Traductology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and is considered an essential reference for Translation Theory and for the academic formation of professionals of Language. Hurtado Albir is also the principal researcher in PACTE research group

Anna Kuznik currently works at the Instytut Filologii Romańskiej, University of Wroclaw. Anna does research in Translation Studies, Linguistics, Quantitative Social Research and Qualitative Social Research. Their current project is 'Defining translation. The presence and impact of intralingual and intersemiotic translation among translation services providers'.

Patricia Rodríguez-Inés, Universidade Autônoma de Barcelona, Barcelona,

Dr. Patricia Rodríguez-Inés holds a PhD in Translation Studies, and is a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). Her research interests include translation teaching, the use of corpus methodology in Translation Studies, and empirical and experimental research in translation competence. She teaches general and specialised translation from English to Spanish and viceversa, translation technologies, and corpus linguistics applied to translation. She has been and currently is involved in several national and international research projects.

Profesora ayudante de lengua italiana del Departament de Traducció i d’Interpretació. Del 2002 al 2006 fue becaria de investigación (FI) del grupo PACTE. Doctora en Teoría de la Traducción por la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Del 2006 al 2008 fue responsable del equipo español UAB en un proyecto europeo (Learning Via Subtitling, nº 229954 - CP-1-2006-1- GR - LINGUA – L2PP). Sus intereses investigadores se centran en la traducción audiovisual, la adquisición de la competencia traductora, la didáctica del italiano para traductores y la aplicación de nuevas tecnologías y aplicaciones informáticas en la elaboración de material didáctico para la enseñanza de lenguas extranjeras.

Possui graduação em Bacharelado em Letras com Habilitação em Tradução pela Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho (2009), graduação em Bacharelado em Ciências Sociais pela Universidade Federal de São Carlos (2004), mestrado em Estudos da Tradução pela Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho (2012) e doutorado em Estudos da Tradução pela Universidade Estadual Paulista ´ Júlio de Mesquita Filho´ IBILCE (2017). Atualmente é pós-doutoranda da Universidade Estadual Paulista ´ Júlio de Mesquita Filho´ IBILCE. Tem experiência na área de Lingüística, com ênfase em Tradução, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: lingüística de corpus, estudos da tradução baseados em corpus, tradução, ciências sociais e terminologia.
