This article is an introductory text to the translation of the fourth chapter of Nostra signora del mar dolce: missioni e paesaggi di Amazzonia, entitled “Jambù-Assù e l’aldeia” (“Jambú-Assú and the village”), published in 1901 and the fruit of Gemma Ferruggia's trip to Pará and Amazonas in 1898. In the excerpt in question, the author recounts the eight days she spent in what is now the municipality of São Francisco do Pará and took advantage of the fact that she was unable to visit the Maracanã aldeia to focus on describing the local landscape, customs and culture. As well as introducing the author, the reasons for her trip and the themes she deals with in the chapter, with special attention to the intertextuality of Ferruggia's narrative and her Eurocentric and exoticizing view of Brazil, the text also discusses some of the translation choices made, which are mainly aimed at exoticizing the source text so that its reading can be perceived as a cultural journey and a journey through time for the contemporary reader (as indicated by Santos, 2014). The bibliographical sources of the folk songs transcribed by Ferruggia are also presented.
