Miguel de Unamuno in Hungary: Translators, translations and retranslations

On the occasion of the 160th anniversary of the birth of Miguel de Unamuno (1864–1936), this article aims to present the Hungarian reception of the work of the most prominent figure of the generation of '98. The study focuses, in particular, on translations and the question of retranslation, regarding the two Hungarian versions, on the one hand of Nothing Less Than a Real Man – the first from 1923 and the second from 1999 – and, on the other, of the novel Fog whose first Spanish edition (1914) turns 110 years old in 2024. The first Hungarian version of Unamuno's most famous nivola was born in 1924, from the pen of Viktor Garády (Vittorio de Gauss), while the second was published in 2021, thanks to the work of translator Nelli Litvai. The two Hungarian texts – and almost an entire century that has passed between them – give us the opportunity to also reflect on the causes and motives of the retranslation.
