Abstract

This article is an analysis of a chapter of the book Amazone et Cordillère, by the traveler Charles Wiener, originally published in the French magazine Journal de Voyage, in the second half of the 19th century. To do so, I started with the relationship between translation and travel writing and how this relationship affects the language and culture of travelers (Cronin, 2000). To analyze Amazone et Cordillère, I based myself on the paradigm of description developed by ethnographic translation, that is, on the effort to transform the traveler's gaze into writing (Laplantine, 1996) and on its relationship with interlingual translation (Jakobson 2011). As for the translation strategies used by the traveling-author, I followed the concept of Culture-specific Items developed by Franco Aixelá (1996). This analysis shows that among the translation strategies, the most used are: repetition, intratextual explanation and extratextual explanation.
