This paper is a commentary on the translation of a chapter of the work Reise in Brasilien, by Johann B. von Spix and Carl F. P. von Martius, Bavarian travellers who reported on their journey through Brazil between 1817 and 1820, carried out by order of the King of Bavaria. The article begins with observations about the authors and their work, introducing the subject of the translated text in the context of the scientific journeys of the Enlightenment. This is followed by data on previously published translations of Reise in Brasilien, before moving on to a discussion of the translation activity itself, with explanations and justifications for the translation choices, always made with the aim of the translated text being read not only by readers interested in the subject, but also as a historical source with rich and relevant content for various areas of knowledge, such as the history of Brazil and the Amazon, ethnography, the history of science, botany and zoology, among others.
