The aim of this study was to conduct a bibliometric analysis of research on interpreter competence to identify the concepts and theories related to interpreter competencies in the most impactful bibliographic references. To achieve this, we used the quantitative analysis models proposed by Aria and Cuccurullo (2017). Data on scientific production on the topic were collected from Scopus and Web of Science databases and filtered according to predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Finally, the ten most impactful articles identified in the bibliometric study were analyzed. The study concludes that the field of interpreter competence is still evolving, as publications show a growth rate of 10.35% in the number of publications over the past two decades. It is also noted that most authors are occasional researchers on the topic and there is a low level of international collaboration in the published research, as well as low local citation rates. Another notable point is the strong presence of China as the leading country in terms of authors who publish the most and are most cited. Based on the results and conclusions of this study, it is possible to identify gaps in the field and propose a research agenda.
