The article proposes a reflection on the role of translation in travel narratives in contemporary times, considering also the translation performed by the traveler in their interaction with the Other. It explores the influence of travel and its narrative in disseminating knowledge about the world, as well as its potential impact on the current climate crisis. Initially, we draw on discussions about ecology and translation (Cronin, 2001, 2021, 2022), as well as on travel, translation, and writing (Cronin, 2000; Fordsdick, 2019; Machado; Pageaux, 2001). Subsequently, we analyze Théodore Lacordaire's account titled "Excursion dans l'Oyapock," originally published in the Revue des Deux Mondes in 1833. During this analysis, we observe that the description of the Oiapoque region and its indigenous communities already hinted at signs of population extermination, deforestation, and the subsequent social and environmental impacts.
